From Salima to the World: Telling Malawi’s Story of Foundational Learning at FLEX 2026

Every child’s learning journey begins with a single step.

Long before they solve mathematics problems, write essays, or dream about their future careers, children first learn to recognise letters, count numbers, ask questions, and express themselves with confidence. These are the foundations upon which all future learning is built.

That is what foundational learning is all about.

In July 2026, Malawi welcomed more than 600 education leaders, policymakers, researchers, and development partners from over 25 countries for the Africa Foundational Learning Exchange (FLEX 2026) in Lilongwe. The conference was a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and commitment to improving learning outcomes for children across the continent.

For Eluby Consulting, however, the story began long before the conference halls opened.

It began in a classroom at Chidowola Primary School in rural Salima.

Because every great future begins with a strong foundation and every impact deserves to be seen.

In partnership with UNICEF, Eluby Consulting travelled to the school to document the impact of Malawi’s Pre-Primary Class (P-Class) programme, an initiative supported by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education to ensure children develop essential literacy, numeracy, and social skills before entering primary school.

Our assignment was not simply to capture photographs and videos.

It was to tell a human story.

A story of eager young learners confidently sounding out letters for the first time. A story of classrooms filled with curiosity, laughter, and discovery. A story of dedicated teachers who arrive each day determined to give every child the strongest possible start in life.

Behind every image was a child discovering their potential. Behind every frame was a teacher investing in the future of Malawi.

Across Africa, millions of children still face barriers to accessing quality early learning opportunities. Initiatives such as P-Class demonstrate how investing in early childhood education can equip children with the foundational skills they need to succeed throughout their educational journey and beyond.

These were the stories we carried with us from Salima to Lilongwe.

At FLEX 2026, those moments became part of a much larger conversation. The photographs and films captured by Eluby Consulting helped showcase Malawi’s progress in foundational learning to delegates from across the continent. Through powerful visual storytelling, participants experienced first-hand the impact that UNICEF, the Ministry of Education, teachers, communities, and development partners are making in improving learning outcomes for children.

Our work did not stop with the stories from Salima.

Throughout the conference, the Eluby Consulting team documented keynote addresses, ministerial discussions, panel sessions, exhibitions, and the countless moments of collaboration that defined FLEX 2026. From the first light of morning preparations to the final evening sessions, our cameras followed the conversations, connections, and commitments shaping the future of education in Africa.

Every photograph captured a milestone.

Every video preserved a conversation.

Every story helped amplify the shared vision that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, thrive, and reach their full potential.

At Eluby Consulting, we believe that storytelling is more than documenting events it is about giving visibility to impact. It is about ensuring that meaningful work reaches the audiences who can champion it, invest in it, and replicate it.

From a rural classroom in Salima to one of Africa’s most important education gatherings, we were honoured to help tell Malawi’s story of foundational learning.

Documenting Impact Through Human-Centered Storytelling

At Eluby Consulting, we believe that behind every successful development initiative are real people, real stories, and real impact. Over the past few days, our team has been on the ground documenting powerful human-interest stories through photography as part of our ongoing partnership with UNICEF Malawi.

Our assignment took us to Linthipe EPA and Chitedze Health Centre, where we captured the impact that health campaigns and community support initiatives are having on mothers and children. From healthcare workers engaging with communities to mothers accessing essential services for their children, every moment reflected the importance of investing in community health and well-being.

Photography is more than just capturing images. It is a powerful storytelling tool that helps bring development work closer to people by highlighting authentic experiences and measurable impact. Through visual storytelling, we are able to showcase the dedication of frontline workers, the resilience of communities, and the positive outcomes that partnerships and support systems can create.

At Eluby Consulting, our approach to storytelling is human-centered. We focus on documenting moments that matter and creating content that not only informs but also connects emotionally with audiences. Every photograph becomes a lens through which impact can be seen, understood, and remembered.

This assignment goes beyond photography coverage. It is about preserving stories of hope, resilience, and transformation while highlighting the meaningful difference UNICEF’s support is making in communities across Malawi.

As we continue to document impactful initiatives, we remain committed to using storytelling, photography, and multimedia communication to amplify voices, inspire action, and showcase change where it matters most.

Documenting the launch of Mlimi Ozisata Aiphule Promotion

Today, the ELUBY CONSULTING team was at Ufulu Gardens in Lilongwe documenting the launch of the Mlimi Ozisata Aiphule Promotion. The event brought together key stakeholders and farmers to celebrate and highlight initiatives aimed at supporting Malawi’s agricultural community.

As part of our ongoing partnership with, ELUBY CONSULTING was commissioned to capture and document the impact this initiative is having on Malawian farmers. Listening to Voices That Matter: ELUBY CONSULTING in Malawi’s Southern Region

This past week, the Eluby consulting team traveled across Malawi’s Southern Region alongside UNICEF Malawi, engaging with young girls and local leaders from Nsanje, Chikwawa, Mulanje, Phalombe, and Thyolo.

The visit was centered on one important mission: listening.

At Eluby consulting, we believe that impactful storytelling begins long before the camera rolls or the first word is written. It starts with understanding people, communities, and lived experiences. Through meaningful conversations and community engagement, we take time to ensure that every story is approached with care, accuracy, and intention.

For us, storytelling is more than documentation. It is about amplifying voices that are often unheard, creating visibility for important issues, and ensuring communities have a platform to share their realities in their own words.

By working closely with local communities, leaders, and partners, we continue to create stories that not only inform but inspire action and lasting impact.

At the heart of our work is a commitment to authenticity because the most powerful stories are the ones rooted in truth, empathy, and human connection.

Beyond the Lens: Real Stories from Malawi’s National Polio Vaccination Campaign

“We walk long distances because every child matters. No one should be left behind.”
— Health worker, Northern Malawi

In the early hours of the morning, before the heat of the day sets in, health workers begin their journeys moving from one household to another, carrying vaccines, determination, and a shared mission: to protect every child.

This is the reality of Malawi’s national polio vaccination campaign. And for Eluby Consulting, it was a story we were honored to tell.

In partnership with UNICEF, our team traveled across the Northern Region Mzimba, Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, Chitipa, and Karonga documenting the effort through powerful, human-centered photography.

On the Road: Stories from the Field

Each district brought its own rhythm, its own challenges, and its own stories.

In some communities, health workers navigated long distances on foot, going door to door to ensure no child was missed. In others, caregivers gathered at health facilities, children in their arms, waiting patiently for a moment that could protect a lifetime.

We witnessed quiet determination in the faces of health workers, and trust in the eyes of parents who welcomed them into their homes.

There were moments of joy a child comforted after receiving a vaccine, a mother smiling with relief and moments of resilience, where teams pushed forward despite distance, weather, and fatigue.

These are the moments that often go unseen. But they are the heartbeat of public health.

Beyond the Camera: Capturing What Matters

At Eluby Consulting, we believe that photography is more than documentation it is storytelling.

Every image we captured was intentional not just to show what happened, but to convey why it matters.

Many of our photographs taken during this journey has since been used in campaign messaging, extending their reach far beyond the communities we visited. Those images carry the voices, efforts, and impact of an entire movement.

Through visual storytelling, we help translate complex public health efforts into human stories that people can connect with, understand, and support.

The Power of Partnership

Our collaboration with UNICEF reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that critical health interventions are not only implemented but also seen and understood.

Strong partnerships bridge the gap between action and awareness. They ensure that the work happening on the ground reaches wider audiences, mobilizes support, and strengthens trust within communities.

Because impact is not only measured by what is done but also by how it is communicated

Honoring the Frontline Heroes

Health workers at Zolozolo primary school preparing to vaccinate children under 10

At the center of this campaign are the health workers.

They are the first to arrive and the last to leave. They walk long distances, answer questions, address concerns, and return day after day with unwavering commitment.

Their work is not always visible, but its impact is immeasurable. Every child reached, every vaccine administered, is a step toward a healthier future.

Through our lens, we sought to honor their dedication to ensure their efforts are recognized, celebrated, and remembered.

Why Storytelling Matters in Public Health

In public health, numbers tell one part of the story but people tell the rest.

Storytelling has the power to:

  • Build trust within communities
  • Humanize large-scale health campaigns
  • Encourage participation and behavior change
  • Showcase impact to partners and stakeholders

By capturing real experiences, we create a bridge between information and emotion turning awareness into action.

Conclusion: Telling Stories That Matter

The polio vaccination campaign in Malawi is more than an initiative it is a collective effort driven by people who care deeply about the future of their communities.

From Mzimba to Karonga, every image we captured is a reminder that behind every campaign are real people, real efforts, and real impact.

At Eluby Consulting, we remain committed to telling these stories because every story told is a step toward a healthier future for every child.
